Researchers of the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) have been awarded two grants, from the Action "ARISTEIA" of the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs/General Secretariat for Research and Technology, in the field of Mathematics, Statistics, Informatics and Computer Sciences.

Work by researchers at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) in Greece, whose results are published today in the journal Science, reveals that the repeated parts of animal bodies – for example the vertebrae in our spine – are generated by a similar mechanism not only among vertebrates (fish, birds, mammals, etc.) but also in our more distant relatives, the insects.

Research carried out at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology-FORTH and published today in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences USA reveals that proteins involved in Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER) activate the expression of key growth factors during postnatal development.

Today, Tuesday, February 7, 2012, Safer Internet Day is internationally celebrated. The slogan of this year's celebration "Discover the digital world together ... safely!" refers to the convergence of generations, indicating the urgent need for all of us to familiarize ourselves with the Internet, in order to be able to protect our children from the pitfalls effectively, giving them at the same time all the skills needed to surf online in a responsible and safe manner.

The Signal Processing Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) organized the international Winter School on Speech and Audio Processing for Immersive Environments and Future Interfaces of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (IEEE SPS Winter School on SAIE 2012, http://www.s3p-saie.eu/), which took place from January 16th to 20th 2012, at FORTH, in Heraklion Crete, Greece.

The call has now opened for the 22nd Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of Vassilis Xanthopoulos and Stephanos Pnevmatikos, both professors at the University of Crete and members of the Foundation for Research & Technology (FORTH).
