The Research Center of Crete (RCC) begins its operation in Heraklion, Crete comprising three institutes:
- Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB),
- Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL),
- Institute of Computer Science (ICS)
in collaboration with the University of Crete.
The Crete University Press (CUP) is founded in Heraklion Crete, under an agreement between the Pancretan Association and the Research Center of Crete (RCC).
Two new Institutes are founded in Crete:
- Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics (IACM) in Heraklion and
- Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) in Rethymnon.
Τhe Skinakas Observatory is jointly founded by FORTH, the University of Crete and the Institute Max Planck of Extraterrestrial Physics of Germany, within the framework of the Greek - German cooperation in Science and Technology.
Two more Institutes join RCC:
- Institute of Chemical Engineering and High Temperature Chemical Processes (ICE-HT) in Patras (founded in 1984)
- Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute (CPERI) in Thessaloniki (founded in 1984)
The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) is formally established, administratively independent and one of the largest research centers in the country
The PRAXI Network (HELP-FORWARD Hellenic Project for Wider Application of R&D) is established under the auspices of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), the Federation of Industries of Northern Greece (FING) and the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas.
The Science and Technology Park of Crete (STEP-C) is founded, in support of the diffusion of the technical knowledge (know-how) accumulated within the Academic Community and the Research Institutes.
CPERI (based in Thessaloniki) forms a separate nucleus of the Center for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) in Northern Greece.
The Biomedical Research Institute (founded in 1998), based in Ioannina, joins FORTH.
The Biomedical Research Institute (BRI) is integrated into the Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, as Department of Biomedical Research, based in Ioannina.
The Institute of Astrophysics (IA) is founded in Heraklion, Crete.
The Institute of Petroleum Research (IPR) is founded in Chania, Crete.
The Biomedical Research Institute (BRI), is re-established.
The Institute of Petroleum Research (IPR) is renamed Institute of Geoenergy (IG).
The Greek Institute for Human Genomics is founded in Athens.
FORTH currently comprises ten (10) Research Institutes.
