The call has now opened for the 26th Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of Vassilis Xanthopoulos and Stephanos Pnevmatikos, both professors at the University of Crete and members of the Foundation for Research & Technology (FORTH).

Nektarios Tavernarakis, a researcher at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), has recently been awarded for the second time the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Investigator Grant for his research proposal titled “MacroAutophagy and Necrotic Neurodegeneration in Ageing”.

The Municipality of Heraklion in cooperation with Institute Of Computer Science of FORTH (Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas) implements the EU-funded project RERUM "Reliable, and secure Internet of Things applications for smart cities» (REliable, Resilient and secUre loT for sMart city applications -RERUM) under FP7 (7th Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration), from 09.01.2013 until 08.31.2016.

The international team of NFFA-Europe, a research infrastructure funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Programme, will convene in Milano, Italy, on 12th April, to mark the start of operation of the first full suite of key infrastructures for nanoscience research to the public.

The research project GreenVM, for which Prof. Manolis Katevenis, Head of the Computer Architecture and VLSI (CARV) laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), and Prof. Panagiota Fatourou, affiliated faculty member of CARV, acted as Principal Investigators, has recently concluded. GreenVM has been funded through the “Excellence” action of the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology, operating under the National Strategic Reference Framework 2007–2013.

The next generation of supercomputers must be capable of a billion billion calculations per second. These are referred to as Exascale computersand with this ability to undertake such volume of calculations, they will transform our understanding of the world through advanced simulation and problem solving.
