Project presentation day: SMARTOURISM - Meteorological, Bioclimatic and Oceanographic Information Imaging System for Tourism Applications

Open Conference for the presentation of the results of the research project SMARTOURISM is organized on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at 17:30, at the Amirandes Hotel in Gouves, by the Coastal and Marine Research Laboratory of the Institute of Computational Mathematics of FORTH.

The result of this project is an original, stand-alone system, which provides services for forecasting the local weather conditions, as well as, the calculation of specific indicators for measuring the normal comfort of guests, using artificial intelligence methods. The system provides information about the optimal use of the beach during summertime holidays, and the selection of the desired destination, highlighting the comparative advantage of the local bio-climate.

The system utilizes coastal environmental and climate data collected locally, from a meteorological station hosted at the AMIRANDES Hotel, and enriched with satellite data from the Copernicus system and the European Space Agency (ESA).

It can also be used for the bioclimatic improvement of facilities and recreation areas (beach, indoor and outdoor areas) operating as a small, local observatory for the management of the coastal area. Taking climate change into account ensures adaptability and the development of resilience to its effects.

The implementation of the SMARTOURISM system improves, through the innovation of Smart Specialization, the competitiveness of the partnering hotels and creates access to new, more demanding and higher quality markets internationally, a development that is in line with the strategic development plan for expanding and upgrading the services provided by the hotels to their guests.

SMARTOURISM was funded by the CRETE Operational Program (ERDF Invitation Code-28) entitled Action 1.b.1: Demonstration-experimental development projects promoting research and innovation in RIS3Crete sectors, covered by the European Social Fund (EC) and National Resources.
