Three Academic Institutions of Crete - the University of Crete (Medical School, Department of Computer Science and Department of Materials Science), the Technical University of Crete (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering) and the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) - jointly founded and operate, as oftheacademic year 2020-2021, a new international postgraduate studies programme on Biomedical Engineering.

More than forty professors and researchers from the collaborating Institutions will teach in this new programme, transferring their high expertise on cutting edge technology to the classroom. The composition of the advisory board is indicative of the international status of this new programme, since it consists of acclaimed professors of the USA and Europe, and top executives of leaders in the industry, such as General Electric and Siemens.

The field of Biomedical Engineering is a large and growing employment pool. This trend is evident in the fact that, while in all engineering professions employment rises by 9%, employment in Biomedical Engineering rises by 27% globally.

The new programme aspires to train University graduates (Medical, Technical and Science Schools) on innovative life and health supporting technologies, providing strong foundations for employment in research, in industries and hospital/diagnostic units.

For the academic year 2020-2021, the programme will be delivered through distance learning, in the afternoon hours. The laboratory/clinical training will be carried out as an intensive course, on 1-15 July 2021 in Heraklion – Crete (physical presence is required). Participant students will incur the tuition fees which, for the entire programme, amount to €1500 for students from European Economic Area (EEA) countries and €3000 for students from non-EEA countries. The programme will feature scholarships, in the form of exemption from the tuition fees, for a significant number of students, based on their performance. The entire Masters programme on Biomedical Engineering will be implemented in English and will be of 90 and 120 ECTS and of a duration of 15 and 24 months respectively.
