Completion of the Research Program Digital Crete: Mediterranean CulturalItineraries
The Institute for Mediterranean Studies (IMS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) is proud to announce the completion of the research program "Digital Crete: Mediterranean Cultural Itineraries." The project makes available to the public a wealth of cultural information about archaeology, environment, cultural foundations, as well as history, art and music of the island of Crete via the webpage http://digitalcrete.ims.forth.gr.
The webpage users can visit Crete through a digital archaeological atlas that includes a series of mapping applications and virtual navigation on a 3-D model of the island, information about western art in Crete during the Venetian occupation, the monuments and rural settlements during the Ottoman period, the history of Cretan cities around 1900, the work of Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco), as well as the possibility to explore "musical pathways" in Crete.
Although the larger part of the database is available on the internet, even more information can be found at the Digital Documentation and Management Inventory Unit at the premises of IMS-FORTH.
The Institute for Mediterranean Studies has organized an event to present the project results at its premises (Melissinou and Nikiforou Foka street, at the old town of Rethymno) on Friday, October 24, 2008 , from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Visitors will be guided around the databases by the project researchers.
The aforementioned research project has been achieved within the framework of the program "Information Society Action 1: Documentation, Management and Promotion of Greek Cultural Heritage" with additional funding by the "Extension & Enhancement of Digital Crete: Mediterranean Cultural Itineraries" program.
