Educational activity entitled "Tomorrows Have Arrived"
New pilot educational initiative by FORTH
The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) is launching a new pilot educational initiative entitled "Tomorrows Have Arrived" that aims to bring high school students into direct contact with young scientists -specifically postgraduate fellows of FORTH- through short, inspiring presentations and live dialogue. The events are addressed to first-grade Lyceum students.
The sessions will take place in the morning at the FORTH Science and Cultural Center (Averof & Zografou Streets, Heraklion) and will have a total duration of approximately 120 minutes.
Description of the Activity
Part A (Duration: 90 minutes)
Each session will feature four postgraduate fellows from various Institutes of FORTH. Each speaker will deliver a 5–7 minute presentation in an accessible and engaging manner, discussing their research topic, academic background, and personal journey.
The short presentations will be followed by an open discussion, during which students will have the opportunity to ask questions about university studies, everyday research life, and the speakers’ academic and career choices.
Part B (Duration: 30 minutes)
Presentation of the Institute of Astrophysics of FORTH (IA-FORTH)
The Institute of Astrophysics is active in observational and theoretical astrophysics, as well as in applied research and science communication. It combines the study of the Universe with modern technology, instrument development, and continuous interaction with society.
The presentation will briefly address:
- The main research areas of the Institute’s groups
- What everyday life in a research institute looks like
- Relevant academic pathways students may pursue
- How applied research connects to technology, innovation, and new skills
- The importance of science communication
Educational Objectives
Through the “Tomorrows Have Arrived” events, students will:
- Become familiar with different scientific and professional fields
- Learn what contemporary research and academic life are like
- Be inspired by young scientists who are just a few steps ahead in their academic journey
- Develop a more realistic, yet optimistic, perspective on their near future
The initiative also functions as an experiential career guidance activity, offering students meaningful, real-world contact with the fields of higher education, research, science, and innovation.
The events may be incorporated into the school curriculum as career guidance activities or educational visits.
Maximum number of participants: 50 first-grade Lyceum students
