Professor Charalambos Makridakis was elected on 14/1/2017 Director of the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics of FORTH.

Charalambos Makridakis’s research is focused on Computational Mathematics, mainly in the areas of Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and of Multi-Scale Modelling and Simulation. He is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sussex and Professor of Numerical Analysis at the University of Crete.

Ms Gelina Harlaftis, Professor of Maritime History in the Department of History of the Ionian University and Affiliated Researcher with the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of FORTH, was elected Director of the Institute on February 10, 2017. Her official appointment is expected in the next few weeks.

Professor Spiros Anastasiadis elected President of the European Polymer Federation

Spiros H. Anastasiadis, Professor of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Crete and Director of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), has been unanimously elected as the President of the European Polymer Federation (EPF) for the period 2018-2019.

The HOBBIT project completes one year of implementation

HOBBIT is a project within the EU’s “Horizon 2020” framework program and started on December 1st, 2015. The consortium consists of InfAI (coordinator, Germany), Fraunhofer IAIS (Germany), FORTH (Greece), NCSR “Demokritos” (Greece), iMinds (Belgium), USU Software AG (Germany), Ontos AG (Switzerland), OpenLink Software (UK), AGT Group R&D GmbH (Germany) and TomTom (Poland). FORTH-ICS announces its collaboration with Audyssey Laboratories Inc.

The Ιnstitute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), Heraklion, Crete, announced today the start of a collaboration with leading US audio solutions provider Audyssey Labs, located in Los Angeles, California, USA. Audyssey and FORTH have signed a licensing agreement that allows audio processing intellectual property developed by FORTH to be included in Audyssey’s suite of technologies offered to its customers.

More computations for less energy – the European way. New approach for ARM-based technology to halve the cost of powering data centers

EUROSERVER, a leading EU-funded research project, is paving the way toward lower energy consumption in data centers. Based on the concept of chiplets, where multiple silicon subsystems are mounted in an integrated device, along with an associated new groundbreaking system architecture, the project has enabled more energy-efficient servers and has even inspired startups motivated by the new technology.
