New polariton light - matter switch paves the way for faster more efficient opto-electronics
Greek researchers from the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), in collaboration with the Universities of Cambridge, UK and Mexico, have created a novel energy-efficient switch utilising a "liquid form" of light. The device could be a breakthrough in electronics providing unprecedented energy - efficient circuits.
Professor Nektarios Tavernarakis was appointed as new member of the ERC Scientific Council
Professor Nektarios Tavernarakis, Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of FORTH, was appointed as new member of the Scientific Council of the ERC. New members are selected by an independent Identification Committee, composed of six distinguished scientists appointed by the Commission. The scientific community was consulted in this process.
Alexandros Lappas, Research Director at FORTH, Receives a Prestigious Fulbright Award
Alexandros Lappas, a chemical physicist and Research Director in the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) at FORTH, will be supported by the Fulbright Foundation under their 2016-17 Visiting Scholars program (www.fulbright.gr) with the purpose to lecture and conduct research in the United States.

FORTH – Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas, in Heraklion, Greece and KALEAO Ltd. – High Tech company based in Cambridge, UK – announced today the creation of the KALEAO's Heraklion development centre that officially seals their on-going collaboration towards a joint research lab on low power computing and shows a clear indication of the growing international high-tech involvement in Crete, Greece. The centre is going to be inaugurated on the 30th of June in Heraklion.
Opening of the New Ancient DNA Laboratory of IMBB
On Friday 20th May 2016, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Ancient DNA Laboratory, the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) – FORTH, had an International Meeting titled “Ancient DNA Analysis: A new view in the past”, in which invited experts in the topics of Ancient DNA Analysis, Paleoanthropology, Archaeology and Archaeogenetics, presented recent developments in the field. The formal opening of the new Ancient DNA laboratory was done by the Alternate Minister of Research and Innovation, Prof. Costas Fotakis and Vice Governors of the Region of Crete.
